we wanted small platform that would also serve as step from deck, we ended up with platform new lawn bed and pond.

now that the garage is back to normal i was able to finish what was left on subwoofer. plate amp arrived 3 weeks earlier so i have had all the parts necessary for a while. first thing i did was i mounted woofer in place and added spikes.

now it is polyfill time. i got bag from wall marts hobby section. enclosure needs to be stuffed with it. the good amount is 1 to 1.5 pound per cubic foot. stuffing too dense would have exactly opposite effect on enclosure and made it smaller. the way this works is that the air inside moved by cone displacement wiggles poly fill fibers. their movements warm up the air inside the enclosure. warm air is less dense than cold air which makes the volume of the enclosure bigger than it really is.

we decided to install pegboard instead of gyp board. it will be easy and faster. for ceiling we rented drywall lift.

after whole weekend of work we finally finished ceiling, south and west wall. we still need to install shelves next weekend. we hope garage will be done next weekend.

we decided to start new project. we would like to finish and insulate our unfinished garage. we must do it by individual walls because we don't have space where to store all things.

from now on, i am going to quite improvise. i am going for glossy white finish. i could have it professionally done at any body shop but the price is quite outrageous and this is diy project anyways. i did some research online to see how people are tacking this kind of project. i could rent spray gun and attempt to do it same way as it would be done in body shop. this however would still cost too much for renting equipment and material itself. so, i am going to use what is relatively cheap and readily available.

step 1:
i purchased BIN, shellac based wood primer, at Home Depot. it is supposed to seal porosity and have good cover ability. i did two coats today.

followed with speckling and sanding with 220 grit, than another round of 2 coats of primer and speckling.
after everything sanded smooth i did 2 coats of krylon white gloss.

than i wet sanded with 1500 grit. circular, horizontal, vertical, diagonal. lots of elbow grease used.

finally i waxed and buffed the surface to the shine i am happy with.

enclosure

today i started working on enclosure. i am using 3/4" mdf for all sides and internal braces. it is cheap material and easy one to finish.

all pieces cut to size. i might do some sanding to fine tune the fit. now i need to rout circular opening for driver, openings in brace and cutout in back baffle for amp.

today i managed to start assembling box together. i also installed hurricane nuts for driver attachment. i didnt enclose the box completely just yet as i will be sealing all the connections inside the box with caulk.

next step is finishing mdf enclosure. i am going to attempt white glossy finish. first, i rough sanded all sides with finish sander and 80 grit paper. mainly i concentrated on mdf connections as these required most attention to be nicely smooth and flush. i didnt really touch anything else with 80 grit.

next i patched fine blemishes with speckling paste as i already had it. bondo or wood filler can also be used and are probably better way to go. when it dries i will sand it with 150grit. if it looks good i will follow with 220. if it doesnt i will do another round of speckling paste.

i used countersunk hurricane nuts for leg inserts.

last thing to do was to chamfer all the edges just a bit.

diy subwoofer

i am building subwoofer to accompany my new ht setup. after a lot of research i decided for diy build. this way i can design whatever enclosure shape, volume (more about this later) and finish i want. this really matters as i want to blend it with our white interior and keep jana happy. it is still going to be somewhat monsterous box in order for it to sound good, but i can play with parameters and adjust shape and size to our satisfaction. also it will kill any mainstream brand sub on the spot for about half price. based on the volume of our living room i decided to go with 12" driver in sealed enclosure. sealed subs are known to be less efficient comparing to ported ones, but tend to be more accurate, smaller and simpler to build. and i can still port it later if i wanted to.

for enclosure design i used winISD, which is freeware that calculates recommended enclosure volume based on thiele/small parameters. it is very simple program. the value that needs to be selected is Qtc, which basically is total resonance of speaker, whatever that means. the ideal value is 0.707, which should give flattest response and lowest possible f3 for a given driver. some people like it lower, but that enlarges enclosure volume significantly. higher Qtc will result in smaller enclosures, but too high values will result in "boomy" sound. i am going to play it safe and shoot for 0.69. that results in 3cf enclosure which with internal braces, driver volume and amp volume subtracted will give Qtc of around 0.71. my curve looks pretty decent and gives f3 value of 36hz.

i ordered Dayton RSS315HF-4 12" Reference HF 4 Ohm driver along with bash 300 amp, mounting hardware and grill cloth and frame set from Parts Express. I am expecting delivery tomorrow.

i just got the shipment in. bash amp is on back order till february though. here are some images of dayton driver.

we got 4 low cabinet frames that will go along the wall. two on the sides had to be modified to fit the room width.

portion of the cabinets in both corners had to be cot off.

since there is no space to run your cables we had to do a little hack. cabinets are held 4" off the wall to create cavity for all the cables.

than we used kitchen plinth to create removable cover, that covers the gap. now we can add as many cable holes in the plinth as we need. looks very clean, no cables to mess with.

now with the frames, they could stay open or be covered. we left some of them open for electronics and used shelves with high gloss panels for rest of them. drawers were located asymmetrically. shelf was also hung to the right of tv to eliminate symmetry even more.

also some cabinets were added behind the sofa.

looks very nice, we are quite pleased with the outcome.

also dog crate got moved from bedroom corner to closet. this way it is out of sight, lulu has privacy and we dont have to see thugly wire crate everytime we enter the room. closet shelving got slightly modified to accomodate crate.

one is finally done

counter top in place. this 5'x2' piece wasnt so heavy so we could manage to install it in place without additional pair of hands. it came out much better than kitchen ones in terms of air holes. guess we did good job vibrating it. but than, it is matter of what you prefer. solid consistent look like this one or speckled look that we have in the kitchen. now the last thing is to caulk and put back all the fixtures back in place.

saturday we rented ground hog to dig holes for deck foundations. it is very handy machine. we managed to dig 10 holes in just 2 hours.
next time i will use 10" bit for 8" tube to have some moving space for adjustement.

so the temperature climbed over 50 and we were able to start our deck project.

first, temporary deck between garage and house needed to be removed. eventually this whole corridor will become deck.
the trench is for irrigation main line. unfortunately it has to go under the future deck. to keep it easier to fix the pipe in case something happens, we are placing the main in 2# bigger sleeve. that way we just pull it out, fix it and push it back without having to remove the deck.

we started to work on our closet sliding panels. we need total of 9 panels. each panel is full height 8'-6" (floor to ceiling) hollow core slab. custom made panel would cost $250, having to buy 9 panels would be way over our budget. so we custom made it ourselves using stock size hollow core slabs available from Home Depot for 23$. thus we ended up paying $40 for a slab. we glued slabs together to get height needed. seem was concealed using wood filler and electric sander. couple coats of paint and there you have full height slab for fraction of price of custom made one.

i used leftover siding wood to make platforms for shower. we ordered glass door for master shower so we can get rid of that ugly plastic curtain inspector made us to install in order to pass it through final. guest shower doesnt really need curtain so we got rid of it. tile to drywall connections still need to be caulked/finished.

we are pretty much settled now. house is really warm, even without heating on, it is still comfy in short sleeved shirt and sweat pants. however it feels nice when floors get warm and we can walk bare feet. we got comcast guys install cable and internet today. now we need big lcd screen for the living room. also our friends brought us some plants, so rooms are getting slowly filled.

we had our first guests over to celebrate our move.

it has been a while since i last posted. things moved along pretty quick and after all city inspectors were sufficiently satisfied, we were finally allowed to move in. not ideal time to move in all this slush though. i got stuck in mud twice with u-haul track while trying to pull as close to sliding door as possible. not a good idea.

kitchen cabinets almost complete, however we need to wait for shipment of door hinges, so we only finished drawers. we finally have electricity and water so we are able to work late.

we created master closet from melamine boards. we will add one more hanging rod on the right side, as well as low shelf for shoes. bigger shelf on the left will receive extendable pants hangers.

we worked on lots of little things this weekend. we added side curtain on the peninsula end and sealed all counter top surfaces. knowing how messy it gets when we cook we decided to go with topical sealer rather than penetration one. this should protect us from most of the stains. it also gave counter tops nice satin finish.

some finish electrical items were also installed this week, along with some interior lighting fixtures. also we started filling control joints with silicone compound.

our kitchen is slowly coming together. ikea cabinets assembly is pretty simple. however, our kitchen cabinets came with 8" tall legs instead with 4" ones we ordered. that would put our counter top way too high, not saying it would be higher than window sill. so we spent half day figuring out how to modify 8" legs to a shorter size. in the end we used simple tool for cutting copper pies.

framed wall in front of peninsular cabinets is mainly for wiring purposes, but also will cover back of the cabinets. plywood on top of cabinets serves as underlayment under counter tops.

kitchen cabinets all in place. drawers and doors will be installed later. we also started to work on templates for concrete counter tops. i used hardboard material to slice strips and created template that included sink, cook top, faucet and outlet locations. since we are doing counter tops upside down, templates had to be flipped when creating forms.

forms cut out of melamine, with reinforcement and knockout panels in place. steel will be taken out when pouring and put back so it sits in 1/3rd of counter top thickness from the top. it will be actually in 1/3rd of thickness from the bottom when we flip them over.

peninsular piece is huge, it took 6 of 80 pounds concrete bags. after the form was full, we screeded it with 2x4 and let it sit for an hour before hard troweling it. smaller counter top ate 4 bags and side curtain 2 bags of concrete mix. for concrete mix we used quickrete 5000, with addition of super plasticizer. to eliminate micro cracking we added polypropylene fibers.

as we dont have time to wait a week or so for concrete to cure, we removed forms the next day.
3rd day from pour, we flipped smaller counter top over. the surface is really smooth from melamine form surface and even though we quite vibrated the forms with sander while pouring, there are still little voids that will need to be filled with slurry.

jana applied second coat of sealer today, giving floors some kind of wet look. it will protect concrete from absorbing liquid spills, and will help to clean it easier. contrlo joints will be eventually filled with contrasting grey joint compound.
we manage to complete substantial portion of siding. we had to redo north and east garage side, and managed to complete whole south side. bottom portions are still left uninstalled, but except that, garage is done. now the biggest portion left is back of the house where siding goes up to 12'.

in addition to hardie board siding, we are using brazilian mahagony hardwood. we are installing it with open joints to create vented rainscreen. couple rows at the bottom are not installed yet so they dont get damaged, as we are still waiting for excavation sub to install perimeter drain.

we got also connected to water sewer and gas this week.

boards need to be countersunk pre-drilled prior to atachement. we are using brown coated ss screws to attach to verticals.

we assembled all kitchen cabinets this saturday. doors and drawers will be installed later, after cabinets are in place and countertop is in place. our friend tomas helped us to manage this in one day.
sunday we finished installing and painting rain screen supports. as a final touch i rented planer and shaved verticals that were not in plane with other ones, to ensure that siding lines will be straight.

all ceilings and walls are insulated with batts in addition to 2" layer of foam. this assembly should result in R32 walls and R52 ceilings. we still need to insulate foundation concrete. for this purpose we will use 1 1/2" extruded polystyrene boards, same as we used for underslab insulation.
drywall hanging started today. it goes really fast, but the whole process needs to be coordinated with soffit framing . droped soffit in living room will give it a better height to width proportion.

half of the house is now sprayed with foam insulation. it is closed cell foam with R-7 per 1". we are doing 2" walls and roof and combine it with batts, as this stuff is quite expensive. it does seal and laminate the whole house envelope, making it air tight and structurally stronger.
also our siding hardwood was delivered today. ultimately we decided for brasilian mahagony which we will treat with Penofin Hardwood stain.

we took trip to Ikea in Salt Lake City. This is the closest store to denver. We flew there and drove back. Phone ordered our kitchen cabinets and appliances to make sure we will get everything we need. Ouro rder was delivered to storage warehouse where we picked it up. our contractor asked us to cover floors since closed cell spray foam insulation will be blown in this upcoming week. we used rosin paper, which we will keep over floor until painting is complete. whole place looks like it got "beautifull" pink carpet. also while jana was covering floors, i installed blockings in exterior wall cavity for siding attachement.

my first DIY project happened to be working table. since there is more and more work we are doing ourselfs, this large working area will be handy. after construction is over i will keep it in garrage to have my little hobby area.
friday we received ceramic cook top.

windows

windows are finally here. after receiving quotes on windows that ranged anywhere between $5000 adn $72000, we decided to go with Jeld Wen Siteline EX serie, with extruded aluminum exterior and wood interior. Even though it is not exactly the look we wanted (which was totally out of our budget), they are very decent quality for the price.
in one day, all the windows were installed. we are still waiting on patio double sliding door.
meanhile we started to collect all the tools we might need for the work we are planing to do ourselves.

vaproshield

due to the fact that our roofer might install roofing membrane following week, we installed top layer of vaproshield so he can overlap membrane over parapets. remaining vaproshield will be installed after all windows are in place.

vapro flashing

since we are using rainscreen system with a lot of open joints, the only choice for house wrap was vaproshield. it is waterproof, breatheable membrane that self seals arount staple penetrations, it is UV reistant and it comes in black. basically it is like wraping the whole house in gore-tex.
first step is to wrap around openings. to make it easier, vaproshield pre-cut flahing is available as well as 3d corners that make it really easy to flash around openings. rest of the membrane will be applied after windows are in place.
all rough framing is slowly geting finalized, ceiling framing was installed, there are still some minor things that need to be corrected. electrician started to place housing boxes where outlets and switches will be located.
