EXTERIOR

  1. Your house is beautiful and looks very comfortable to live in. I have a question about your rainscreen. Have you had any problems with insects getting into the reveals and making nests? Do you think that the use of an insect screen on top of the furring and behind the final cover would detract from the overall appearance?

  2. we had two small nests. i sprayed them and they were gone. i dont think it is rain screen fault though. here in denver people have wasps building nests on the houses whether they have rains screen or not. they always find comfy spot.

  3. We love your house, especially the exterior. How did you install your hardiplanks and is there any special technique so there is no seams or batten needed? We need to reside our stucco house and will strip all the old off but really like what you have done as an alternative. Do you need to paint it or did you use one of their pre-applied colors? Do you think it is a less expensive option than stucco. Thanks!

  4. it is rain-screen application. in order to have open joints you need to use membrane that is designed for this purpose. we used vaproshield. hardi boards are installed on 2x4 pt verticals with 1/2" gap. we didnt use prefinished boards as we were nail attaching them.

  5. Hey I just found your blog. I love it. Really like the look of the house. I am interested in the early build of it, do you have any other pics of how it was framed out, etc. My real questions is this: What is the white material on the outside of the house? Where do you get it from? What does it Cost? Also What wood siding is on the exterior, and is it treated? How was it installed, etc? Thanks I appreciate it.

  6. we have millions of pictures from each stage. email me if you want to see them. white siding is hardi panel, fairly cheap, could be had at any lumber yard. wood is brasilian mahohany. it is stained to prevent turning grey. both siding materials are installed as rain screen.

  7. I'm looking to use hardipanel on a rainscreen for a similar clean, modern look. Can you give more detail on how you attached the hardipanel to the rainscreen - specifically - did you use screws or nails and how did you end up with such a smooth finish? Do you have any closeups during the process to show the details?

  8. hardie panels are nailed flush, then painted over. you cant really see nail heads from the distance, but from closer you can if you look for them.
